Following Biotrans 2013 in Manchester I had high hopes for this year in Vienna, and I wasn’t disappointed. The conference was well attended from around the world and the presentations were excellent. CSIRO Biocatalysis had a hand in 4 of the 462 posters on display and on the whole I thought they were very well received, with great feedback and enthusiasm from the other delegates. It also gave me a chance to snoop at the rivalling research from groups at UCL and Graz and see what they’d been up to! Of note, I particularly enjoyed Prof. Wolfgang Kroutil’s award presentation, giving some fantastic examples of in vitro biocatalytic cascades, and Prof. Sang Yup Lee’s comprehensive presentation on the power of metabolic engineering, but there were plenty of memorable talks to choose from.

Aside from the conference, Vienna is a beautiful city and it was great to escape the Australian (Canberra) winter, if only for a few days. All in all, a thoroughly enjoyable and valuable whirlwind tour of Vienna.
